In Kanata's world, all citizens must wear "vision orbs" that allow them to be condemned by popular vote if they commit a crime. Kanata is the only son of a respected village leader who runs an orphanage, and has begun to harbor feelings for Misella, a girl in his care.One fateful night, tragedy befalls Misella, and Kanata commits a grave crime in order to save her. In her zeal to protect Kanata from the consequences, Misella ends up with blood on her own hands. Caught in the act by their vision orbs, both are judged to be "transgressors" by their fellow citizens, and "enforcers" are dispatched to punish them.
As they flee for their lives, they meet the notorious Vicious, a man known worldwide as "The Great Transgressor." He offers them a choice: "Own your sin, or let it own you."
Kanata and Misella decide to face up to what they've done, and fight for their lives while bearing the weight of their crimes. Now able to tap into the power of their "blood sins," the two accompany Vicious on a quest to find respite from a world that wants them erased.
Kanata Hjuger
The story's protagonist and the only son of a respected village leader. He espouses a desire to protect the weak, but is rarely taken seriously due to his obvious naivete. He believes strongly in vision orb justice, and only opens his eyes to its cruelty when the system brands him as a criminal.
Misella
The story's heroine. An orphan raised at a shelter run by Kanata's father. Devoid of self-doubt, she will not hesitate to take extreme measures to keep Kanata safe. Though she owes Vicious her life, she fears that the Great Transgressor is leading Kanata down a dark path and despises him for it.
Vicious
Widely known as the "Great Transgressor," Vicious is feared and despised the world over. He possesses a devil-may-care attitude, and believes that people should live their lives as their whims guide them. He crosses paths with and rescues the condemned Kanata and Misella in his search for a certain place. Vicious possesses the unique ability to unlock people's blood sins.
Aegis Alver
A handsome young man of impeccable character who serves as Knight Commander of Medagal. His obsession with righteousness borders on obstinacy. Placing full faith in the judgments of the vision orb, he pursues Kanata and his companions relentlessly.
Yuna Azetta
A capable young journalist with a cheery personality and a penchant for lying. Her incessant, colorfully accented banter can make her come off as flaky and unreliable, but she's willing to risk her life in pursuit of the truth. She also sells illicit information to Vicious on the side.
Orwin Granberg
A grown man with an affable, if world-weary disposition. Perpetually listless, he lives in the military state of Toshimina but contributes little to society. He has a wife, Niina, and a 10-year old daughter named Aura. They subsist primarily off of Niina's earnings.
